“Year of China” at SAIS
SAIS is examining China’s evolving role on the world stage as a special theme for this academic year. Through events, publications and student trips to China, SAIS is exploring the critical issues related to China’s rapidly growing influence and the challenges and opportunities this presents to the United States and the global community. The China focus coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies. Read more here.

Hopkins-Nanjing Center Celebrated 20th Anniversary in June

HNC 20th Anniversary
On June 22 and 23, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies hosted its 20th anniversary celebration and reunion at the Nanjing campus. The celebration culminated in the presentation of an award to former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Other events included the 2007 graduation ceremony, keynote address by Kissinger, alumni dinners, panel discussions, building dedication, concert and gala ball.

Henry Paulson, secretary of the Treasury, spoke at SAIS on Monday, April 16 as part of a daylong conference about "China's Financial System Reforms and Governance." This conference was the culminating event of the "Year of China" at SAIS where we have been examining China's evolving role on the world stage as a special theme this academic year.

SAIS Hosted Conference on China's Engagement With Africa on April 6 and 7

SAIS hosted a two-day conference on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 to address "China's Engagement With Africa: Opportunity and Challenge." Friday afternoon's panel discussion about policy options in the changing strategic landscape featured Harry Broadman of the World Bank, Denis Tull of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Adama Gaye of Ecobank, and Pang Zhongying (moderator) of Nankai University.

Chinese Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong Spoke at SAIS on March 28
Zhou Wenzhong, the Chinese ambassador to the United States, spoke at SAIS on Wednesday, March 28 about  "U.S.-China Relations in the Context of Peaceful Development."

James Mann, Foreign Policy Institute author-in-residence, has recently published The China Fantasy: How Our Leaders Explain Away Chinese Repression. In The China Fantasy, published by Viking, Mann examines the evolution of American policy toward China.

Steve Phillips, adjunct professor of China Studies, was interviewed about President Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China in a Baltimore Sun article entitled, "Stroke of Diplomacy."

On Wednesday, November 8, SAIS held a forum about “Making China Policy: Views From the White House"  featuring Kenneth Lieberthal and SAIS graduate Michael Green, who each served as director for Asia Affairs at the National Security Council from 1998 to 2000 and 2004 to 2005, respectively.

SAIS Hosted Forum on October 11 About 30th Anniversary of Mao’s Death
Chas. W. Freeman Jr., co-chairman of the U.S.-China Policy Foundation who also served as the principal American interpreter for President Nixon’s 1972 historic visit to China, and David M. Lampton, director of the SAIS China Studies Program, gave a presentation at SAIS about “From Mao to Now” on Wednesday, October 11.

SAIS Hosted Forum on September 13 About India’s Economy From the China Perspective
Pieter Bottelier, senior adjunct professor of China Studies at SAIS and former chief of mission for the World Bank in China, gave a lecture on Wednesday, September 13 entitled, “India’s Economy From the Perspective of China’s Experience.”

Hopkins-Nanjing Center to Celebrate 20th Anniversary in June
