JHU Honors SAIS Staffer for Community Service
Martina Leinz, SAIS’s professional development specialist in the Career Services Office, is the school’s first staff member to receive The Johns Hopkins University Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Community Service. JHU recognized Leinz for her gun control advocacy work as president of the Northern Virginia chapter of the Million Mom March. She and seven other JHU employees accepted their awards during a January 11 ceremony in Baltimore.

For the past seven years, Leinz has volunteered 15 hours a week to this cause, helping block legislation that would allow guns in Virginia bars and meeting with individuals affected by gun violence. She also worked closely with survivors and family members of victims of the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings to draft testimony on banning guns from college campuses.

Leinz’s interest in gun safety started in high school, when one of her classmates shot and killed several people at an elementary school near her home.
