Flahertys Support SAIS

SAIS Advisory Council members Pamela P. Flaherty ’68 and Peter Flaherty B’67, ’68 have committed $1.5 million to support student fellowships, the Dean’s Opportunity Fund and the Bologna Center building renovation. Their Bologna Center gift includes provisions for naming the new lobby in memory of classmate Judy Hendren Mello B’67, ’68.

ExxonMobil Gift to SAIS
ExxonMobil Foundation has awarded $15,000 to the African Studies Program, in recognition of the appointment of Peter Lewis as program director.

Luc de Smet Fund Established
In memory of Luc de Smet B’70, ’71, the Morris S. Smith Foundation, Larry Franklin and Steve Haas ’72 have made initial gifts to establish the Luc de Smet Fund and have issued a challenge pledge to match any additional gifts. The Luc de Smet Fellowship will be awarded to a Bologna Center student for a second year of study at SAIS in Washington, and the Luc de Smet Prize will be awarded to a second-year Bologna student in Washington who exemplifies leadership among the entire SAIS community. Alumni Host Events
Thanks to SAIS Advisory Council member Robert Hildreth ’75 for hosting a reception in Boston on November 16 for alumni and friends. Professor David M. Lampton spoke at the event. Thanks also to advisory council member Doug Carlston ’71, who hosted a reception for alumni and friends at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco on November 17 featuring African Studies Program Director Peter Lewis.

Gifts for Roett Chair
Led by a $335,000 grant from the Zemurray Foundation and a $46,000 gift from D. Scott Palmer, former professorial lecturer with the Latin American Studies Program, along with generous alumni donations, Robert Hildreth ’75 has stepped forward with $200,000 in matching funds to support the Riordan Roett Professorship in Latin American Studies. Hildreth established the professorship in 2004 with a leadership commitment of $2 million to celebrate Professor Roett's 30 years of educating leaders for careers focused on Latin America. To date, SAIS has raised over $670,000 toward the $1 million challenge goal.
