Introduction to the SAIS Ph.D.

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is conferred in recognition of mature scholarship and originality of thought. The program is designed to develop each student's proficiency in three related fields of international studies, including one field of specialization.

Each Ph.D. student is required to:

(1) complete coursework relevant to his or her chosen fields of study,
(2) complete coursework in research methodology,
(3) pass written comprehensive examinations,
(4) demonstrate competence in International Economics,
(5) demonstrate language competence,
(6) present and defend a dissertation prospectus,
(7) write a dissertation and
(8) successfully defend the dissertation at an oral examination.

Each Ph.D. candidate completes the program under the supervision of the faculty director of his or her field of specialization. Not all fields admit Ph.D. students each year. For information about the fields accepting new students, please visit the Ph.D. Frequently Asked Questions page.
